The Song for Africa Scholarship sponsors carefully selected students from the Kibera slums in Nairobi, Kenya. It gives them the opportunity to complete secondary education, instills confidence, and gives them hope for the future.
More specifically, the scholarship currently provides funds for four students. It covers school fees, uniforms, reference books, and other services, such as psychosocial support, to ensure that the recipients and their families are as stable as possible on all fronts.
ALICE AKINYI – 16 years old
Alice has lived in the Kibera slums her whole life. She shares a one room house with her parents and her three siblings. Despite the hardships, she has a positive outlook and is determined to finish school and achieve her goals.
EDWARD OMONDI – 19 years old
Edward is a determined young man who has worked hard in an unfriendly environment to find his place at Got Agulu Secondary School. He now enjoys the simple provisions supplied by the school such as water, food, bedding and books. His favorite subject is English and he dreams of becoming a journalist.
MILLICENT ADHIAMBO – 21 years old
Millicent has overcome the odds and thanks to the SFA Scholarship Fund, she is currently a student at the Cicely McDonnell School of Nursing. In the past year, she has grown into a confident young woman who can adapt to her environment.
“I feel good being here, I am learning to cope with different kinds of characters and people, being here has changed my way of thinking, I am able to be more tolerant.”
“Being here has made me realise that your background doesn’t matter, that out of over one hundred 1st year nursing students, I am the only one from Kibera. When I tell them that, they don’t believe it.”
HELLEN NDUKU
Hellen is an orphan whose only living relatives are her grandparents. She has spent most of her life at the Baraka za Ibrahim Centre, an informal school in Kibera. Her dream is to become a musician.
